Lo Tried this place on the weekend and it was packed during lunch time. We got the combo set and added another appetizer and extra fried egg and bocchoy for two people. The combo was larger than expected, the appetizer was big. They gave a lot of beef and it was fun putting together our rice noodles. The fried fish appetizer was delicious, I preferred that over the fried pork. The service was really good!

2.Udon Mugizo - San Mateo

Geetanjali Chugh Almost my first time trying udon, and I absolutely loved it! We ordered the nabeyaki udon, and it was excellent. the broth was light yet full of flavor, and the udon noodles were cooked to perfection. The shrimp tempura that came with it was crispy and satisfying and not greasy at all. Would recommend this udon. We also tried the seiro mushi, which is a complete meal featuring steamed vegetables, unagi, tempura, and a mini udon. If you’re hungry, definitely go for this. The unagi is served with a sweet and umami sauce. While I usually don’t enjoy sweet flavors in savory dishes, I still found the overall dish to be worth trying. The service was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, making for a really pleasant dining experience. The portion size is generous. The only downside is the wait: be sure to sign up on Yelp to join the queue, as it can get busy. That said, for this level of quality, the wait is absolutely worth it.

Rhett Burden This morning, I took my daughter to Pinstripes at Hillsdale Mall for their “Brunch with Santa” event, and it exceeded every expectation. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and festive the perfect blend of elegant and family-friendly that made the experience feel truly special. The food was genuinely good not just “event food,” but the kind of quality brunch you’d seek out on any weekend. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared, with enough variety to please both kids and adults. But what really made the morning unforgettable was how they handled Santa’s visits. Rather than the typical long line approach, Santa made his way to each table, giving every child unhurried, personal attention. My daughter’s face lit up, and I loved that we could enjoy our meal while Santa took the time to really connect with her. You could tell the staff had put real thought into creating an experience that felt magical without feeling rushed or transactional. The team at Pinstripes clearly understands that these moments matter they’re creating memories families will treasure. If you’re looking for a holiday experience that combines excellent food, a beautiful setting, and genuine care for making children feel special, I can’t recommend this highly enough. We’ll definitely be back next year!

4.Foreigner Cafe

Address: 60 E 3rd Ave Ste 108, San Mateo, CA 94401

GlomadicLife This has been my go-to café in downtown San Mateo for years. I come here all the time — for casual breakfasts, coffee meetings, afternoon tea, and meeting new friends. It never disappoints. Coffee is consistently good. The turmeric latte is perfect during seasonal transitions, and their signature Yema Latte and Cuban coffee are always solid. Food-wise, I usually go for the spinach and mushroom quiche or the tomato basil quiche — simple, fluffy, and comforting. Desserts are great too. The chocolate coffee tart is a standout (rich and chocolaty with pistachio flakes), and the passion fruit tart is a crowd favorite. The space is cozy, warm, and inviting. Outdoor seating is dog-friendly with plenty of room, and the indoor area is always comfortable and beautiful. Service is consistently attentive and friendly, which makes it an easy place to linger. All in all, Foreigner is one of those reliable, feel-good spots you keep coming back to — whether it’s for a quiet coffee, a casual business chat, or a relaxed weekend brunch. Perfect for: coffee meetings, casual breakfasts, and a cozy neighborhood café you can always count on.

Wei-Ai Tai Quaint Japanese restaurant, tucked away in a quiet corner in the northeast part of downtown San Mateo. Delicious yakitori items, as well as rice bowls, fried appetizers, and ramen. Fast and efficient service, but hard to get a seat unless you have a reservation. Very small parking lot, but there is street parking and a couple of parking lots nearby.

Gabriele Moreira Great food, beautiful restaurant and a wonderful atmosphere. Gigi gave excellent recommendations and really cared about our experience, while Cleo, the manager, was warm and attentive. The ossobuco risotto was rich and perfectly cooked, and the strawberry caipirinha was fresh and balanced. A stunning place to enjoy great service, great drinks and great food.

Ron Lui Stopped in for early dinner the other day. Ordered beef brisket bento, chicken corn pot stickers, beef pancake, salt pepper chicken wings, beef onion dumplings and beef soup noodle. The food came out pretty quick. All the food was delicious. The beef pancake was crunchy and had a soup filling like Shanghai soup dumpling. The post stickers were nice and crunchy. The broth for the soup noodles was really tasty. The beef brisket bento, was first time Ive had it with a beef gravy and I loved it. Chicken wings tasted more like popcorn chicken instead of salt pepper chicken and it was still good. I think the beef onion dumpling had the same doing as the beef pancake, also very good. Overall everything was good. They even sell the dumplings frozen if you wanted to take them home. Definitely will be back to try done other stuff. Staff was very friendly, seems to be family run.

TK Always good brunches in this light filled restaurant. Tall windows connects you to the outdoor. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. One of the few breakfast spots around town. Big menu to choose from. Street parking is quite easy. Fully accessible entrance. Long wait on the weekends though, but well worth it.
